Back to School Night

The PTSA will have a virtual Zoom BTSN starting at 4:30PM. Join us to ask any questions you have about the organization, how we're adjusting to the virtual environment to support our teachers and students, or to purchase a membership.

 

We will host two breakout sessions:

  • 5:30 Asian Parent Student Network

  • 6:00 African American Parent Student Network

 

When you enter the Zoom session, simply type in the chat box or let us know that you are there for the breakout session and we will put you in the room. We will also have private breakout rooms for membership and billing questions.

Please join us on Tuesday, August 18th at 7:00 PM for a special membership meeting. Maryland PTA requires our PTSA to meet in person to hold votes by the general membership. The meeting will be held outdoors in the lower level parking lot at Wootton High School. In order to maintain social distancing, everyone must be at least six feet apart. We will livestream the meeting on Zoom and put up a recording of the meeting on our website within two days of the meeting. If you plan to attend the meeting in person, please write your name in bold, large lettering on a sheet of paper. We will be voting on several items and this will help us to ensure all votes are counted.

Normally we would say that we hoped everyone had a wonderful summer but given the current climate, we hope you all are hanging in there and adjusting to this new normal we are now living in. That being said, we at the PTSA are also trying to adjust to the current reality of this school year. We want to convey what we have been working on to keep our staff, students, and families engaged with each other. 

Normally we hold a monthly meeting in the school library that is open to all of our families. At those meetings, PTSA members are permitted to vote on changes to our budget, vote in new executive board members, and to vote on any other items of business as required by our bylaws. Our plan for this fall is to hold any meetings that require a vote in the lower level parking lot of the high school. Maryland PTA currently requires us to have in-person meetings in order to vote. We will also livestream the in-person meetings via Zoom so that all parents have an opportunity to attend. Recordings of the meetings will also be posted on our website.

We are planning to hold our first in-person meeting this month. We plan to send out details on that meeting later this week. For other meetings that will not require any voting, we will hold those meetings virtually via Zoom.

We welcome parents and students to help make the PTSA a better organization. The PTSA currently has openings for the following positions this year:

  • Latin Parent Student Network Liaison

  • Fundraising Coordinator (new position)

  • MCCPTA Delegate

  • Parliamentarian

If you are interested in one of these positions, please reach out to Nikki Bossert. Only the positions noted as executive board members require a vote by the general membership to be appointed to the position. All of our PTSA positions noted above are members of the PTSA Board. In the past, PTSA membership fees and donations were used to fund in-school events. This year, we plan to use those funds to aid students and staff with new needs that arisen due to virtual learning. We are working with the administration to determine what those needs are and we will announce those new initiatives at our meetings, as they are decided on. 

In order to make this year a success, we need your support more now than ever. Memberships are available online through AtoZConnect or you can also download and print a membership form and return it to the front office or mail it in. We usually have a table at Back to School night for membership signups. We plan to have a virtual event on Back to School night to assist any parents with signups or questions.

Individual parent memberships are $25 and student memberships are $6. We also offer $10 memberships for parents of students that qualify for Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS). Each membership purchased provides the member with the right to vote at our general membership meetings and to receive a hardcopy of our printed parent/student directory, as well as online access via login.atozconnect.com or via the AtoZConnect app. Please note that we do offer student grants, which are available to PTSA student members only. 

Don't forget to check out the PTSA's school store to buy Wootton gear. The store is new this year and we welcome feedback from students and parents. If you see an item that you would like but want a different color logo on it or if you don't see an item and want to make a special request, send us an email. All funds raised through the PTSA school store are currently being allocated to our goal of buying a new interlocking tile floor for school events, including homecoming. We are also continuing to raise money through AmazonSmile. Please consider making Thomas S. Wootton High School PTSA your preferred Amazon charity. COVID-19 Presentation with Dr. Wei Cui, MD, FACP and Zhen Yuan, RN

Dr. Cui joined us for a virtual presentation on COVID-19 related topics. Dr. Cui is a well-known physician in Maryland and was recognized as the Fellow of American College of Physicians for the high quality of care provided to his patients. He is the immediate past president of the Association of Chinese American Physicians, Mid-Atlantic Chapter.

 

Dr. Cui graduated from Good Samaritan Hospital, an affiliate to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Cui was also trained in Urology overseas, surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as perioperative and pain management at the University of California in San Francisco. He is the attending physician at Suburban Hospital, a part of Johns Hopkins Medicine. As a passionate and knowledgeable physician, Dr. Cui has been taking care of patients with complicated medical conditions. He is an advocate of preventive medicine, including annual wellness checks, vaccinations, cancer screenings, weight management and lifestyle modification consulting. Zhen Yuan is a registered nurse who works with Dr. Cui at Suburban Hospital and is working in the COVID-19 ICU.

Virtual Chat with Professor Dana Baker from Montgomery College

Professor Baker chatted with us to answer the parent questions that were submitted over the past week. Whether your student was already planning to attend Montgomery College this summer/fall or is now considering that path because he/she is deferring plans to attend a 4-year university, this information session likely contains most of the answers you are looking for. Also, Professor Baker wanted to convey that the summer bridge program will still be offered, with the exception of the STEM summer bridge program. She has also provided a few helpful resources.
